Gardening shirt

70s Clothkits kits have always been a big influence on my designs and, as I really enjoy the way the kits look printed on to the fabric before they're cut into, with instructions printed in among the pattern pieces, I’ve often thought why be restricted to making the garment the kit is intended for... and I finally found the perfect panel to use.

This started life as a kit for a gardening apron, printed with veg, flowers, insects, a quote (attributed to Martha Stewart, which has ended up on the sleeve) and the pièce de résistance - pockets for seeds and string! The fabric is a sturdy canvas and the shirt is finished off with bound hems and ball-shaped buttons that reminded me of seed pods.
